WHY A BATHROOM?
Honestly, it was an accident. In the winter of 2022 I suddenly couldn’t stand how sad and dingy the bathroom at my studio was and decided to fix it. After the junk was removed, the ceiling tiles had been replaced, and a new coat of paint had freshened up the floor and walls, the bathroom looked unexpectedly chic. “This looks good enough to hang art in!” I thought, and that thought wouldn’t leave. I invited an international crew of artists and poets to send me their “found art” and put up the first show Lost and Found expecting nothing except my own delight. How wrong I was! That show was written up in the Des Moines Register, travelled to bathrooms in Des Moines, Cedar Falls and Philadelphia, and became the first in a series of exhibitions that continue to this day.
Golden Hind Gallery holds three exhibitions a year and is interested in practices that explore the friction between an artist’s inner selves and “reality”. It is located in the bathroom on the 3rd floor of the historic Fitch Studio Building in downtown Des Moines, Iowa. - Larassa Kabel
